Using Tags in Ghost
Ghost has an extensive, flexible tagging system that allows you to customize many aspects of how content appears on the site. We've set up some tags to get you started.
Public & Private Tags
Tags can be either public or private:
- Public tags are used to organize content, and may appear on the site.
- Private tags start with a hashtag (#) and do not appear on the site, but can be used to add additional properties or track posts on the backend.
Section Tags
Main content is currently tagged with Culture, Civics & Society, Sports, Health & Science, and Neighborhoods.
Posts can have multiple tags, and will appear in multiple verticals as a result. However, the first tag in the list determines how an article is filed on the site. So if the first tag is Culture, the article will appear at:
https://thedownload.news/culture/my-article-slug.
Social videos are tagged with #Social, and are not indexed on the site.
Workflow Tags
These tags are used to manage the workflow. Current workflow tags are #workflow-not-submitted, #workflow-first-edit, and #workflow-second-edit.
#accent-red #accent-orange #accent-yellow #accent-green #accent-teal #accent-blue #accent-purple #accent-pink #accent-brown
Color Tags
Add one of these to a post to change the accent color of the post. The accent color is used in places like buttons, drop caps, and link underlines. You can click the tags below to preview what those changes would look like on this page.
Card Tags
Card tags can change how the post appears on the homepage. There are currently two tags you can use to customize this appearance, #card-split and #card-full-bleed.
Custom card looks are only used on the homepage and section fronts, not in the related stories at the end of a post.
This is the default card look:
Op-Ed: Who Will Sing Our Songs When We Gone?
Philadelphia has been forever changed by gentrification, but what do Black Philadelphians remember?
#card-split is useful for portraiture and featured interviews, and looks like this:
Artina Michelle: A Cinematographer Seeking Light For the Diaspora
“My mind works in light now. It goes beyond filmmaking for me. It’s a part of who I am.”
#card-full-bleed is useful for large evocative images that can handle a text overlay, and looks like this:
In Appreciation Of Philly’s Black Publications
At a time when media consolidation and shrinking local newsrooms threaten diverse storytelling, these publications stand tall, carrying forward a tradition that is as urgent today as it was a century ago.
Even when using custom card tags, always remember to set a custom 16:9 post thumbnail for feature images that are in different proportions, as that thumbnail will be used in other areas of the site!
