On October 5th, The Cado Market took place at Design Philadelphia. The organizers of this market drew inspiration from the historic Colored Mechanics Fair to launch their own Innovation Fair—a vibrant platform for showcasing Black artists and craftspeople.
Known for their dedication to centering and celebrating Black creativity, Cado Market housed an event that featured a diverse array of innovators, from illustrators and curators to potters and dressmakers. The atmosphere was infectious with Black joy and ingenuity as attendees engaged with and supported local businesses.
Debora Charmelus, Cado Market’s founder, emphasized that space remains one of the most persistent obstacles for Black product-based businesses. In addition to vendor showcases, presentations from 1838 Black Metropolis highlighted the importance of utilizing the 1838 census as a tool for shaping the future, while WHYY and Cado Market underscored the critical role of community, communication, and grassroots support in bolstering Black businesses.
The event was a resounding success, setting a new standard for how to uplift and celebrate Black talent and innovation.
